Since having come across local band Saint Yorda a few weeks ago, I'm finding that I'm subconsciously immersing myself in their rather airy-pop sounds, which causes you to enter a trance. They have me well impressed, it has to be said. Saint Yorda are a recently formed band from Cork and I really believe they're something special for the music scene in Ireland. I feel it's almost essential that I write about such a band, as I have a gut feeling Nialler9 himself will be blogging about him within the year (and why not beat him to the chase), but not only for that reason, I sense they could just be the ones to watch.
Not from Dublin and not a sound you've heard coming out of Cork, these guys - or two guys and a girl - are totally mellow and eerie, and you can hear this most notably in their song 'Death Ray'. To give you a brief analysis, the song opens with a lovely catchy beat of claps, followed by a sombre voice, leading into lovely guitar arpeggios. It's put together stunningly. I can't stop listening to the few tracks they have up, I'm not trying be patriotic to the Irish music scene, or whatever, but simply justifying the fact that if you heard Saint Yorda on the radio you'd probably think they’d already made it. Reminiscent of the xx, in my opinion, Saint Yorda maintain their oppressive vibe throughout their songs. They’ve clearly got it, so here's to hoping that this talented trio will make it far in the year 2012. Saint Yorda are supporting Jape next month..not bad for a newly formed band!
